Sebastian Thrun, one of Junior's team leaders, describes how the robot car can deal with a construction road block, and see what the car actually "sees" through lasers.

Lou Ann Hammond, CEO, www.carlist.com, talks to Sebastian Thrun, Associate Professor, Mike Montemerlo, Technical Director, Stanford Racing Team, talk about the qualifying event for Stanford's autonomous vehicle "Junior", in Mountain View, California. 53 teams in total will compete, this being one of Darpa's first stops along the way.

Junior, the robot car from Stanford and sponsored by Intel and other companies, has to understand "perception" in the way humans do which is not an easy task. In this video, Sebastian Thrun one of the team leaders tells us how Junior recognizes specific lanes and then changes lanes.

Sebastian Thrun walks through some of the "thought" processes Junior has to go through during a 4-way stop and to distinguish moving objects (like a car) vs. still objects.

Sebastian Thrun provides some final thoughts the day before the race.
